| HOME | The
Highlanders were a race of ancient Irish invaders who lived in the northernmost regions of
Scotland and seldom lived in the cities. As civilization in Britain moved forward, the
Highlanders became the farmers and poor trade's people who struggled to eke out a very
meager existence off the land. Many Americans are descendants of Highlanders, and yet many
more descend from the Border and Lowland Scots who often have no clan affiliations of any
sort. The effects of the Scottish race on what we consider to be the American culture of today are virtually too numerous to meation. Often people confuse being Scottish with membership in a highland clan. The truth is that many if not most Scots have no affiliation with the ancient clans.
